Taiwan’s Ministry of Education (MOE) held a private school consultation meeting to review our institution’s plan to change into Dharma Drum University. The plan was approved and under further review at MOE’s review conference.

The Public Works Department of Taipei County Government issued a construction license (the issue number: 98 Jin-jian-zi-di 00090 hao) for the construction of the Dharma Drum University dormitory (Chanyue college).

Taiwan’s Ministry of Education held the first meeting for the year 2009’s review conference regarding establishment, transformation, and suspension of schools above Junior College level, to review the operation of Dharma Drum Humanity College’s plan for transformation. Attending the meeting were Chancellor Liu Anzhi of the college’s Preparatory Office, Prof. Yu Youhua, Prof. Jiang Mingxiu, Prof. Lin Baoyao, and Prof. Lisa Norton, as well as Li Mengchong and Wu Jinzhang.

The Department of Urban Development, Taipei City Government, issued the utilization change license (issue number: 98 bian-shi-zi-di 0043 hao) to Dharma Drum Degui Academy.

A series of activities were organized to mark the opening of Dharma Drum Degui Academy. The first event, Life Café, held at the library on the 10th floor, featured a dialogue between Yang Pei and Shan Dexing, which was well received by an audience of some 120 participants.

The Sustainable Development Committee was established. Experts and scholars from home and abroad discussed and put forward strategies to facilitate sustainable development, and drafted the Policy for the Establishment of the Sustainable Development Committee, which was approved by the Preparatory Office meeting No. 980408(045).

104 persons took part in an experience-sharing meeting on Buddhist grotto art, as part of the Discover India 2009 activity. The meeting also functioned as a showcase of the efforts of our earliest art volunteer recruits, who have offered their services to Dharma Drum University.

A press conference for the publication of The Most Precious Teachings by Master Sheng Yen, was held at CommonWealth Publishing Company, co-hosted by Prof. Wang Lixing and Prof. Gao Xijun. Ven. Guo Dong, abbot president of Dharma Drum Mountain, opened the event and shared Master Sheng Yen’s teachings. Prof. Liu Anzhi, Chanceller of Dharma Drum University, received a donation by the author of the work on behalf of the university, and restated his pledge to continue the mission entrusted by the late Master.

The School of Life and Living organized the Training the Mind series—the Essential Method to Transcend Adversity, which was jointly taught by eight of Dharma Drum Mountain Sangha monastics.

Dharma Drum University Energy Efficiency and Carbon Reduction Workshop for Earth Day 2009, was held. Dharma Drum University illustrated to the public for the first time how it transformed its Degui Academy into a green building, marking our effort to become a green university.

Ms Pan Xuan, author of The Most Precious Teachings by Master Sheng Yen, donated NT$ 450,000 of her royalties to contribute to the establishment of Dharma Drum University.

Master Ji Cheng from Malaysia, a Dharma heir of the late Master Sheng Yen, gives a public speech titled, “Looking at the World of Wonders though Chan” in the Assembly Hall, located on second floor of Dharma Drum Degui Academy, joined by an enthusiastic crowd of 280 people, 80 more listened to the speech on the sixth floor through videoconference.
